In Germany, a much used cultivar has been Die Pillnitzer Vitaminrose 'PiRo 3', a hybrid between R. dumalis and R. pendulina. This cultivar has a very high vitamin C content, 1200 mg/ 100 g fruit flesh, and has been grown mainly in Germany together with genotypes of R. villosa subsp. pomifera cv. 'Karpatia' from Slovakia (Albrecht, 1993).

Almost all plants in the Scandinavian dogrose plantations originate from selected wild material. Certain genotypes found in nature have shown superior qualities and have therefore been vegetatively propagated. Only one of them has been given a name so far - the Danish 'Lito'. This is a R. canina genotype collected from one of the Danish isles. This genotype is used for producing herbal medicine, where both the dried fruit flesh and the seeds are ground together and marketed as a powder.

Information about the natualized species from which hips are collected in Chile is scarce. 'Rosa mosqueta' is a common name used for at least three different species, R. moschata, R. rubiginosa and R. canina, and probably includes additional species as well as hybrids (Joublan et al, 1996).
