43910. ROSA SATURATA Baker. Rosaceae.
This rose from central China is a shrub about 8 feet in height, nearly unarmed, with compound, sharply serrate leaves. The solitary flowers are dark red with purplish anthers and are abut 2 inches wide. The nearly round fruit is coral red and three-quarters of an inch long. (Adapted from Bailey, Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture, vol. 5, p. 2998.)

"Wilson No. 316. A bush 3 to 7 feet tall with rose-red flowers and coral-red fruits from thickets at Fanghsien, western Hupeh, at elevations of 5,000 to 7,000 feet, July and September, 1907."

R. saturata is a subspecies found at Kew, and said to be from China, which closely resembles R. johannensis Fern. (1918) from New Brunswick and Maine USA.
