Discovered by Swales (Belgium, before 1830).

Bloom:
Crimson, purple shading. . Strong fragrance. Medium, full (26-40 petals), cluster-flowered, cupped-to-flat bloom form. Spring or summer flush with scattered later bloom.
Habit:
Well-branched.
Height: up to 3' (up to 90cm). Width: up to 3' (up to 90cm).
Growing:
USDA zone 6b through 9b (default).

The parentage is disputed. The breeding year is ca. 1845 based on Prince and Rivers. The date of 1819 mentioned in most literature is due to a confusion with an earlier Gallica by Descemet called 'Roi des Pourpres' - see.
Prince distinguishes between 'Du Roi pourpre' and 'Mogador/Crimson superbe'.
'Bernard Mayador', mentioned at L'Haÿ in 1902, and in Sangerhausen in 1936 and 1962 is a misspelling of Bernard Mogador' - references listed here under 'Mogador'
