I think it might be 'Wee Matt' and not 'Wee Man'. I'll get to these two roses later today and add references to be sure.

From my researching it is Wee Man but happy to learn more all of the time - just checked in 'Modern Roses and see the reference to Waitemata is Wee Matt. Some NZ catalogues must have made confusions in the past. Have recently managed to find Waitemata so will take more notice of the flowers. No sign of Wee Man anywhere yet though after thinking it had turned up.

There are now more references on for both 'Wee Man' and 'Wee Matt'. It seems 'Wee Man' is semi-single, and 'Wee Matt' has more petals and is a rosette form. Margaret Hayward in her 1988 book has excellent photos of both roses on p44. And Jocelen Janon listed 'Wee Man' in his garden. Tell him I sent you.

Have been in contact with Jocelen and he does not have the rose and he thinks the rose got listed as in his garden after putting a photo on - but there was no photo with the listing. Jocelen has always been very helpful when he can assist - an asset.

HelpMefind has now deleted 'Wee Man' from Jocelen's garden listing. (Ideally members should check their own garden listings now and then to keep them current).
Two last suggestions: Dawn Eagle (see 1985 reference) and Margaret Hayward (1988 reference) may know where to get 'Wee Man'.

Dawn has been of help since I began the project and I think I know how to get hold of Margaret to ask her. As you know a lot of roses disappear quite quickly. Jocelen does not have Singalong also known as Singaling which is listed with his garden too.

How did you go on finding a 'Hector Deane' in New Zealand? Was anybody able to help you?

At this stage no Hector Deane has shown up in NZ. Learnt something interesting thought and that is that rose members coming over for the World Fed Convention at Palmerston North in Nov are bringing in roses to exhibit yet I can't bring in budwood like that. Possibly Kelvin or David might be able to bring over some roses to exhibit that I am hunting for.

'Hector Deane' has to be there somewhere. See the 1949 reference where Hamilton adopted it as a community rose; Whangarei also adopted it - see 1951 reference. Can you contact the Rose Societies for Whangarei and Waikato? Older members may still have it.
I am sorry I can't help with the New Zealand customs. (I can't help thinking of David's Ruston's book 'a Life With Roses' p41 where he went into Auckland airport with some ostrich feathers, originally from a 1903 garden party at Buckingham Palace. The bamboo supports for the feathers were confiscated, but he got the feathers in as millinary!) I actually thought David raided the local gardens for plant material for his flower demonstrations. I would shudder if I saw him approaching with secs, but I would be most honoured to give him anything at all that he needed.

Hector Deane strikes readily from cuttings in warm weather, using a variant of Mike Shoup's ziplock bag technique. In May/early winter I generally do better with in-ground cuttings, provided someone else will dig them up next winter!

No, but the digging can be too hard on a whinging back - I remember trying to extract Veilchenblau a year after the cuttings went into the ground...

It does not seem possible to list the roses that I have that are the same name but different roses - like 'Aloha' and 'My Sister'

Which 'My Sister' do you have? The white mini by Dawn Eagle - or the red mini by Matthews?
Both are listed by HelpMefind.
There are a few 'Aloha's. Is yours a bush or climber? and is it pink or yellow?
If you go into "Search/Lookup" and type in 'Aloha' then four different ones will be listed.

I have both My Sister roses and 2 Aloha ones but the problem is the system for loading the roses you grow in your garden for others to learn from does not let you list more that one of them with the default system, and if you have a rose that does not fit any they have listed you can't get a rose to show up either and I can't work out how to add new roses to Help Me Find's data base

Have just worked out how to manually add more roses to my list to get the doubles of names so just have to work out now how to add roses to the main data base on Help Me Find that are missing

HelpMefind is pretty good at listing roses. But If there is anything that you can't find, please tell us and I am sure we will be able to add it within a day.

Do you add the roses to their HMF data base? I have quite a few roses that I grow in my garden that don't seem to be listed on Help Me Find. I intend to go through slowly to see if they have been listed with the grower code only and then will get back to you to let you know what could be added. What sorts of data base files can I email to you directly?

Again no luck with the hunt but I have possibly discovered 5 more McGredy roses just by my latest hunt through Help Me Find.
