According to the 1934 reference (Costa azzurra agricola floreale) this rose was not awarded the Gold medal but only a certificate at the International rose trials of Rome in 1934.

Your correction is confirmed by the letter the breeder wrote to an unidentified "Professore" on 28/6/1936 reproduced in the 2008 re-issue of Aicardi's 1951 classic "Le Rose Moderne etc.". In this letter he gives the parentage of 'Saffo' as Sensation x Potin and describes it as "a cherry-red rose".

Two references agree that Saffo received a certificate of merit but disagree as far as the lineage: Sensation x J. Potin in La Costa Azzurra Agricola-Forestale (1934) and Dame Edith Helen x J. Potin in the re-issued Le Rose Moderne by Domenico Aicardi (2008, page 21).
This discrepancy is due to a mistake made by the person who transcribed the handwritten letter by Aicardi (see page 19 of the same re-issued book) where it is clearly started that the parents of Saffo are Sensation x Potin and not Dame Edith Helen x J. Potin (page 21).
Then the lineage reported in HMF should be corrected ... besides the later reference.

Can you decipher the missing text under N.22 ("encro di cinosti" or so?)

Well spotted! Unfortunately that's not the only transcription error. You will see that the last word of the fourth line under n. 22 has been cut off to leave only the letter "f". I've assumed that that means "fiori" as the sentence otherwise makes no sense but the transcription ignores it and consequently...makes no sense. It is a pity that such an important reprint should have been produced so carelessly. The list of Aicardi roses it gives, for example, 23 varieties (it gives dates for n. 22, Saffo and Vivastella which might be right, though).

According to the 1934 reference (Costa azzurra agricola floreale) this rose was bred in 1930-1931, earlier than reported in HMF. As for the deciphering the missing text … up to now I got nothing that makes sense!

I tried to decipher the text under N.22 with some (but still not complete) success.
“Dall'America mi si chiede insistentemente … di innesti.” Translation “From America I am requested insistently … of scions.”
This is in agreement with what reported by Mario Calvino in La Costa azzurra agricola floreale 1936 page 208, “Pochi giorni dopo la Casa Jackson and Perkins telegrafava al Comm. Aicardi: “spediteci subito diecimila innesti della rosa Signora Puricelli” .
Translation “ A few days later the firm Jackson and Perkins sent a telegram to Comm. Aicardi “ Send immediately 10,000 scions of the rose Signora Puricelli”.
Probably scions of N. 22 were also requested.

Not probably,certainly! How else can one explain the fact that this partially illegible sentence comes under the heading of n. 22.
Who holds the original of this letter?

A foot note (page 20) says that the original document is in the library of Roseto Botanico "Carla Fineschi"
