Reading this description of 'Ayez' as a hybrid china, I wonder whether the synonym to 'Spectabilis' as claimed by Rivers in 1837 is not erroneous ("sans s'élever beacoup")	REPLY

(Sorry about the sloppy typing in the note to which you responded.) Very confusing. Not helped by the fact that Fratelli Tagliabue (1840) list 'Ayez' as a Damask, in that it comes under 'omnium Kalendarum', while the Fromont Institute catalogue (1829 p.279) classifies it as "hybride de Bengale". This latter catalogue fortunately gives a detailed description of it.	REPLY

Sorry to have waited nearly ten years to reply, Jedmar. Anyway, I'm sure you're right and that Rivers had made a mistake. The 1832 edition of Annales de l'Institute Royal Horticole de Fromont (fourth volume) gives both 'Ayez' and 'Spectabilis'. The former is listed as you might expect under "Rosiers Hybrides" (p. 220) and the latter as a Noissette (p. 218).	REPLY

I am glad you agree, we will demerge the two listings. The error might have happened because there was an earlier hybrid china named 'Spectabilis', too.	REPLY
