'Somsmoko' rose References
Website/Catalog (12 May 2013) Includes photo(s). 'Star Quality' (SOMsmoko). Attractive, smokey salmon blooms on a medium to small, compact bush. An ideal home gardener's picking rose. The flowers are Salmon Pink and age to a delightful Smokey Pink blend. The round and compacted bush smothers itself in large clusters of flowers, sometimes up to 12 or more per stem which are semi double and open to expose bright yellow stamens. This is a great rose to have at the front of the garden. Awarded Gold Star of the South Pacific, Palmerston North Trial Grounds, New Zealand (2004). Floribunda. Smokey Salmon Pink. Garden: 6.4. Exhibition: 5.9. Height: Medium. Health: 6.6. Fragrance: 3.8. Awards: NZRS Gold Star 2004. Availability: GLE, TAS. Kaitaia: Good health, nice exhibition blooms, small sized, good number of blooms on a plant. Northland: Good garden rose, has large trusses of 40-50 flowers, a bright spot in the garden. Waikato: Looks good in Hamilton Gardens. Manawatu: Slow starter, now very good after 3 to 4 years, medium clusters. Hutt Valley: Large heads, nice in garden and very healthy, not great for exhibiting. South Canterbury: Repeats well, does well for exhibiting, hard to fault. North Otago: Bright colour in the garden, has a long flowering period, good garden rose.

Plants: 73. Garden: 6.6. Exhibition: 5.9. Height: Medium. A good healthy garden rose that can also be used for exhibiting. Blooms are an unusual coral pink colour borne on large trusses. Bloom colour can fade a little in hot sun and with age. Flowers need attention with deadheading to keep plants looking tidy in the garden.

'Star Quality' (Somsmoko) - Gold Star of the South Pacific 2004. the first Gold Star for Rob for a pink floribunda best described as smoky pink. With 'Class Act' as one parent, it was bound to go places anyway. A good all round performer that flew under the radar in the trials and was a bit of a surprise winner of the top award. Excellent health and freedom of flowering.

Waikato: finally getting established and producing large and small stems, unusual colour, spreading bush. Matamata: large heads, low growing spreading bush, takes time to establish. Te Awamutu: Nice rose. Bay of Plenty: Standout pink to start but fades badly, good health. Hutt Valley: Large heads, nice in garden and very healthy, not great for exhibiting. Sth Canterbury: Another very good garden rose, also suitable for exhibiting. Nth Otago: Eye catching colour, large flower heads, needs grooming to keep head looking fresh.

Hutt Valley: Only new plant but shows promise for stems. North Otago: Very large flower heads, large foliage, looks promising. Southland: Very healthy, good looking bright rose.
