Book (1998) Page(s) 63. Melody Marshall Miniature, light yellow, 1993, (MORmelma); 'Mary Marshall' sport; Moore, Ralph S. Description.
Book (1992) Page(s) 96. Nola Simpson. Review of Newer Roses for 1991-92 Season. Miniatures. 'Melody Marshall'. D. Simpson 1985. Sport of 'Mary Marshall'. Creamy yellow; 4 reports on 4 plants; 2-4 years; 35cms. 5.3 rating. Unfortunately the ratings have not improved on this sport of 'Mary Marshall', all say it is not as good as the former, fades out really fast and is insipid, weak and disease prone, no vigour, poor form. Melody is not all that it might be by all accounts.
Book (1991) Page(s) 98. Don Sheppard. Review of Newer Roses for 1990-91 Season. Miniatures. 'Melody Marshall'. D. Simpson 1985. soft creamy yellow; sport of 'Mary Marshall'. 7 reports on 10 bushes; 1-5 years; 60cm; 6.3 rating. This sport from 'Mary Marshall' well known Rosarian from California and named for her daughter, does not do the lady well, some reporters feel. It is not as showy or quite as floriferous as 'Mary' either, they have found, with bush growth rather spindly and spreading. Colour is not striking and blooms come in clusters, but health is good.
Book (1989) Page(s) 108. Don Sheppard. Review of Newer Roses for 1988-89 Season. 'Melody Marshall'. Simpson, 1985. sport of 'Mary Marshall', soft yellow/cream; 5 reports; 5 bushes; 1.3 years; 40cm; 6.5 rating. This mini has all the good points of that old favourite 'Mary Marshall' and the colour is quite a pretty pale yellow. Blooms open fairly loose, repeat can be a little slow, but health is good.
Book (1988) Includes photo(s). p48 [photo] ‘Melody Marshall’ Simpson 1986. Yellow-apricot sport of ‘Mary Marshall’ named after Mary’s daughter. ‘Mary Marshall’ sported in the garden of Trevor and Del Simpson in Taranaki. They have another sport, a pink, again from ‘Mary Marshall’, which I think is even lovelier.
p115 Visiting the home of Del and Trevor Simpson in Taranaki, Mary Marshall noticed ‘her’ miniature had sported a soft yellow bloom and suggested they do something with it. On another visit some years later she chided Del for not marketing the sport. It has now been released through Southern Cross Nurseries. Called ‘Melody Marshall’, it is named after Mary Marshall’s daughter.
