[In his breeding program, Edward Burton Le Grice used] the whole range of purple and dark red Gallicas, especially those that were generous with their pollen, such as 'Tuscany Superb' from which came some very strangely coloured seedlings and, indeed some very beautiful ones, for example 'Lilac Charm' (1952), 'News' (1968), and 'Ripples' (1971)...

From  'Lavender  Pinocchio' came most  of the  modern  lilac pink roses. The parentage of Le Grice's 'Lilac Charm' has not been published, but I feel sure that 1961 introduction came  from 'Lavender Pinocchio', which I saw in Le  Grice's breeding house on a visit to him in the early 1950s. It may be said that we have improved  the garden appearance of lilac pink roses, which are quite easy to raise. I myself have  introduced 'Maud Cole',  'Lake  Como', 'Atlantis', 'Lagoon', 'Seven Seas' and 'Harry Edland', and all of them related to 'Lilac Charm'. Le Grice raised 'Silver Charm' and 'News', the latter an interesting purple from 'Lilac Charm' x 'Tuscany Superb', a Gallica. It was introduced in 1968. Nearly every breeder has his crop of lilac varieties, but nobody can make them blue. That step demands chemical elements which do not exist in these lilac colours any more than in any other roses; until an accident of nature or intelligent research introduces those missing elements, we can go on crossing these lilac varieties until we are blue in the face, which is the nearest we shall get to producing anything blue from them.

Roy and Heather Rumsey, NSW. New Roses.
'Silver Charm' ....is a big improvement on 'Lilac Charm', it is slightly taller, and has better foliage.

p39.  Roy Rumsey.  The Best Roses of the Last Five Years.
Lilac Charm  A charming variety with a large single soft lilac floret and prominent yellow stamens. The growth is low and very bushy. Flowering is fairly constant if the old flower heads are removed as soon as the petals have fallen. An unusual and attractive variety.

p61. Mrs. Heather Rumsey.  The Best Of The Floribundas.
Mauve Floribundas are not very plentiful, but Lilac Charm is a most beautiful single showing lovely golden stamens.  It repeat flowers very well as long as the flowers are cut off as soon as they are over. Like all singles it sets seed very readily, and consequently will stop flowering unless this desire is thwarted. ....strong growth.
