It's very interesting that it says this illustration was taken from a photograph. I've seen other very similar "photographic-looking" drawings particularly from the mid 1890s, but none actually stating it. It must have been a new technique from about that time. It does look very realistic too.

I think I have read about a light shining a reflection on to a mirror, which was then angled down on to the artists paper. Something like that.

Well, however it was done these type of drawings probably hold a bit more weight for potentially identifying foundlings etc than regular drawn-from-life illustrations. You can get a feel which ones are from photographs and which ones aren't.
Just talking about foundlings, is there a way to look up a list of renamed foundling roses here? I see more and more of interest and it would be good to be able to go through a list. Typing in " in the 'begins with' search function doesn't work because you need at least three characters for it to search.

Use AdVANCED SEARCH.
ORIGIN (Breeder/discoverer country. Type in Australia (or whatever country.). Continue.
CLASS. - OTHER (right at the bottom). Select Found Rose. Continue.
SEARCH.
