The purple eye is strong with this one. Which side of the family, in your opinion did it come from?

Both sides, most likely through Evelyn Fison. Look at the parentage, it's very incestuous.

Ew. You are right. Perhaps the trait is a result of inbreeding? That would explain their poor health in most cases.

The mauve "eye" appears regularly in many roses, all from the same line and most often with the saturated coloring. Moore's "Halo" roses tend to have the black spot issues because it was engineered in from the beginning through the use of Angel Farce. Self that a few times to fix and intensify the trait and you get "recessives forever".
