Notes:
Armand Jean de Plessis, Duc -- and Cardinal -- de Richelieu was born 9 September 1585 in Richelieu, Poitou, France. His father died when he was only five, leaving the family in a precarious position financially from which they eventually recovered, but which affected Armand so that he was obsessed throughout his life with the fear of poverty. Known also as The Red Eminence (L'Éminence Rouge), the Cardinal served as minister to Louis XIII From 1624 to 1642. He died in Paris 4 December 1642. Cardinal de Richelieu figures prominently in
The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas.

Most sources credit this rose to Van Sian, in Holland, who gave it to Laffay to introduce in France. However, Francois Joyaux, in his definitive book La Rose de France, says the breeder was actually Louis Parmentier in Belgium.
