'Peerless' rose References
Website/Catalog (1875) Page(s) 64. Hardy Roses, Remontant or Hybrid Perpetual. Peerless. This was shown by our colored plate of 1872. To those having that plate, no description will be necessary, as it is a perfect representationl to those who have not, we will say that it is entirely hardy; flowers in immense clusters of rich crimson; double, of fine form, and very fragrant.
Website/Catalog (1872) Page(s) 6. Rose, New Hybrid Bourbon, "Peerless". (See Colored Plate.) This Rose was raised by Matteo Donaldi, of Astoria, L.I., together with the one below named [Tea Rose, 'Bella'], from seed, about four years ago. I purchased the entire stock from him in May of 1871, so that they are now for the first time offered for sale, he never having sold a plant previous to that time. "Peerless" combines more good qualities than is contained in any other variety of Rose, to our knowledge. It is as entirely hardy as the Hybrid Perpetuals, having the same delicious fragrance peculiar to that class; it blooms as freely as the Noisettes, having, like them, its flowers borne in immense clusters. The flowers are very double, and of excellent form. The coloring is well shown in the plate*, but it is even more vivid in the living plant. One of the most experienced flower-dealers of New York pronounces it the best market Rose ever offered. Price for fine plants, in three inch pots, $1; $9 per dozen. Price for fine plants in four inch pots, $1.50; $15 per dozen. Large stock plants, $7.50 each.
*The colored plate referenced was not included with the catalog when it was scanned more than 100 years later.
