Growing it in the 2nd year, I’ve found its fragrance quite awful (muddy and unpleasant) in spring but really nice (soapy and fruity) in autumn when it’s cool and fresh.
Whilst loving the scent and fresh rich colour on this rose -- the opening blooms are simply exquisite - it has one major failing in that the ageing blooms stay on the plant too long, and turn awful muddy brown and look simply dreadful... one needs to snip these off pronto.. I've grown this twice in different locations, full sun and shadier.
I eagerly ordered this rose last year, much taken by its colouring in the DA catalog. It is now on its second summer (Vancouver BC), climbing well with many blooms, but I have to say that the blooms are a disappointment. They are much paler than illustrated in the catalog, with the advertised apricot centres turning out a rather muddy pale brown. The overall effect is like cream roses that got dirty. Judging from members' photos, I am not alone in experiencing this departure from what is in the catalog. Does anyone share this concern? Is the colouring likely to improve as the shrub matures? Many thanks for any advice or comments.
I only get that when temps hit 90F+... which I don't get too often.. I do find the growth habit somewhat unruly and difficult to train.. it also seems to require lots of water... I hope you enjoy your rose more as time goes on...
