I hear that John N considers it different from "John Toll", which is another cemetery rose in the Adelaide hills.

Low-growing, suckering (it's one I won't grow on its own roots), usually has a mauve tinge.

On June 29, 2003, I acquired two cuttings of a rose called “Miss Hatch’s Cabbage”. They both grew and I put one in a tough spot and one in The Hilton-type of accommodation. For years I communicated with the donor and emails went back and forth. When she said hers had 44 petals, (mine had only 23), I put it down to my barren soil. I eventually came to the conclusion that the rose I received was probably ‘Portlandica’. Adding the references and file today for “Miss Hatch’s Cabbage” has shown me that back in 2005, it was said to have been a semi-single, but if it is of the ‘La Reine’ family, then surely it would be a double?
