Unstable sports are a further cause of confusion. Most of the plants of the dwarf Echo we received had, or have since, reverted to the rambler Tausendschön

Charles Quest-Ritson.  Tausendschön bred by Hermann Kiese, and introduced by Schmidt of Erfurt in 1906.   The thornless stems, and soft green leaves are typical of this beautiful Multiflora Rambler which has always been more popular in every part of the USA, than in England. It gets its name ('A Thousand Beauties') from the shades of colour which its flowers display: tints of white, crimson, pale pink, rose and cream.  The colours and the pattern of growth of the Specimen which Streeper has photographed are typical of plants grown in hot dry climates like California's Central Valley: it looks just like that in the rose gardens at San Jose. It is very vigorous – I have seen specimens of 'Tausendschön' as much as 6 or 7 m tall - while the smooth stems are much more pliable than many Multifloras and make it a good subject for training. It is also very hardy, which means that it is widely available nearly 100 years after its introduction in both Central Europe and New England.
