'Mick Hurley' rose References
Magazine (1998) Page(s) 22. Vol 20, No. 2. Peter Lavings. At the moment I’m working on a strain of Dr. Huey which is recurrent, trying to produce large shrubs which flower profusely and recurrently. I have the one I’m using as a seed parent (I’ve named it ‘Mick Hurley’ after a local identity). It has flowers similar to Dr. Huey but smaller and with trusses of up to a hundred or more blooms, very recurrent and perfume elusive. I’m working on trying for colour variations and better perfume. I fluked it by growing a lot of Dr. Huey seeds intending to use them as rootstocks. I had about a dozen or so in pots to experiment with, but the main stems began too close to the trunk of the tree, making it almost impossible to get a bud in. Anyway I kept them in pots for a while intending to plant the best couple out as a source of rootstock cuttings, when I realised that one kept flowering. So I planted it out and when it developed large heads of blooms, named it after Mick Hurley.
