Bred by Dr. Walter Van Fleet (United States, 1910).
Introduced in United States by Peter Henderson & Co. Historic Archive in 1910 as 'Silver Moon'.
Introduced in Australia by H. Kemp in 1913 as 'Silver Moon'.

Class:

Hybrid Wichurana, Large-Flowered Climber, Rambler.

Bloom:

White, silver(y) shading, golden-yellow stamens. None to mild, apple fragrance. Average diameter 5". Very large, single to semi-double, borne mostly solitary, in small clusters bloom form. Once-blooming spring or summer.

Habit:

Tall, armed with thorns / prickles, climbing. Large, glossy, attractive fall color, leathery foliage.

Height: 9'10" to 20' (300 to 610cm). Width: up to 8' (up to 245cm).

Growing:

USDA zone 7b and warmer. Can be used for hedge. Very vigorous. benefits from winter protection in colder climates. Disease susceptibility: very disease resistant, susceptible to Mildew. Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood.. This rose blooms on old wood.

Notes:

Parentage uncertain, see References. Rampant grower, often 18 to 20 feet in a season. Somewhat tender, especially new growth. Do not prune late in summer.

Although Dr. Van Fleet said in the 1916 American Rose Annual that the Cherokee rose was the pollen parent of this variety, a genetic study by Charles A. Walker, Jr. concluded that R. laevigata was not part of the parentage.
