'Poppius' rose Reviews & Comments

Poppius is of Finnish or Swedish origin, probably from the mid 19th century. It was introduced by Carl Stenberg, director of the experimental field of Swedish Agricultural Academy. He named it for a Finnish high official and politician, Gabriel Poppius who might have brought this rose to Sweden. It is extremely hardy - grows even above the arctic circle - and a lovely sight when in bloom.

You have posted many lovely shots of Poppius. The photos depict roses with varying numbers of petals. Is that a result of conditions of cultivation, or are different varieties in trade under this name?
Also, when your plants leaf out this spring, would you kindly upload a nice shot of the foliage showing the leaf margins? Some of the foliage shots seem to show more typical spinosissima foliage than others. Thanks.

The flowers of Poppius can vary considerably on the same plant and the same year. Even its hips vary, some are round while others are bottle shaped. Poppius is thought to be a hybrid between Rosa pendulina and a cultivar of Rosa pimpinellifolia. I will take the photos you suggest and upload them as soon as I can.

We find comparable variability, although much more within a species than with species crosses. Thank you for this help.
