What a pleasant surprise! Had never encountered this rose until a trip to the Chicago Botanical Gardens yesterday. A very nice shrub that was holding its own near two other beautiful red grandifloras, Crimson Bouquet and Love. As with all roses at the Gardens, these were planted en masse for a striking effect. Cannot testify to its disease resistance, however, because I could not obtain any information regarding whether or not the roses are sprayed. I would assume that they are, since the Austins & AARS test plot roses in a different, no-spray section were all very ravaged at this point in the season, and none of the roses in the Garden proper had any significant signs of disease or leaf loss.
The new variety of Rosa hybrida shrub rose plant of the present invention was created at Greenfield, Wis., U.S.A., by artificial pollination wherein two parents were crossed which previously had been studied in the hope that they would contribute the desired characteristics. The female parent (i.e., the seed parent) was the `Radvel` variety (non-patented in the United States). The male parent (i.e., the pollen parent) of the new variety was the `Country Dancer` variety (non-patented in the United States). The parentage of the new variety can be summarized as follows: `Radvel`.times.`Country Dancer`."
