Included (unsolicited) were five fine plants of a little pink seedling Rugosa which had sowed itself at Bleak House in my time there. I had done nothing with it – except to admire it – but my successors there had propagated and registered it and released it as ‘Bleak House’. John though I might like to plant it. It was a seedling of the white ‘Schneezwerg’ with the same habit of growth, the same disease-free foliage, the same small scarlet hips. But the flowers were bright pink instead of white. So I rang John and ordered five Schneezwerg and planted the pink and the white rose alternatively round the circle between the Prunus trees leaving one space for entrance into what will be in a few years’ time, a secret garden for feeding the birds and delighting the children. This time there will be no danger of reversion for the little pink rose is a seedling not a sport of its white parent.
