'Lady Gay' rose References
Book (2016) Page(s) 159. Includes photo(s). Lady Gay .....there are also possible indications of 'Turner's Crimson Rambler' ancestry. The clusters of the double, small warm pink flowers of this rose are similar to those of 'Dorothy Perkins', but the petals do not reflex as much and the flowers have a ruffled appearance. Unlike the frequently mildewed 'Dorothy Perkins', the foliage of 'Lady Gay' is relatively healthy. 'Lady Gay' is also distinguishable from 'Dorothy Perkins' by the presence of tiny hairs on the pedicels, by a distinct ring of lighter outer petals and by green foliage on new growth instead of bronze. Both roses bloom somewhat late. 'Lady Gay' can be expected to grow to about 16 feet (5 meters).
Book (2006) Page(s) 275. 'Lady Gay' R[ambler] Occasional rebloom. Good fragrance. Habit [diagram] 3. Walsh 1995 [Provenance Heritage Rose Gardens]. A healthy and refined version of 'Dorothy Perkins', with warm, light-pink, double pompon flowers in conical clusters. A seedling of 'Bardou Job', a remontant climber with dark red flowers.
Book (2003) p136. 'White Dorothy' is also similar to 'Mrs. Littleton Dewhurst' [Pearson, 1911], which is actually a white sport not of 'Dorothy Perkins' but of 'Lady Gay'. 'Lady Gay' [Walsh, 1905] was from the beginning hopelessly confused with 'Dorothy Perkins'; more than one clone of each is still sold commercially.
p137. ....I do not believe that 'Minnehaha' is bred from 'Paul Neyron' or that 'Lady Gay' came from Rosa wichurana x 'Bardou Job'. Many are simply to be crosses between R. wichurana and 'Turner's Crimson Rambler'. My own belief is that, when they are subjected to genetic analysis, many will be found to be selfed seedlings of 'Turner's Crimson Rambler'.
p139. 'Lady Gay'. [Walsh, 1905]. Alas, this rose was so similar to 'Dorothy Perkins' that few could distiguish them and now it is uncertain which of the clones in cultivation is the real 'Lady Gay'. All agree that 'Lady Gay' is almost scentless, flowers late, and carries its flowers in large clusters. It was said to have been bred from Rosa wichurana x 'Bardou Job', a crimson China rose, sometimes classed among the early Hybrid Teas. But, from the start, Rosen-Zeitung (e.g., 19-5, 11) maintained that 'Lady Gay' was a seedling of 'Turner's Crimson Rambler'.
Book (Dec 1998) Page(s) 347. Lady Gay Rambler. Walsh, USA, 1905. 'Bardou Job' x Rosa wichuraiana. [Walsh felt 'Lady Gay'] was an improvement over his other creation, 'Dorothy Perkins' [but 'Lady Gay' never achieved the same popularity]... double, salmon-pink blooms... the flowers resemble 'Dorothy Perkins' but have a stronger resistance to mildew... The glossy foliage is small and dark green... Experts find it difficult to tell the difference between the two roses except for the fact that 'Lady Gay' is stronger and healthier
Book (Nov 1994) Page(s) 231. Lady Gay Walsh, USA, 1905. Rosa wichuraiana x 'Bardou Job'. Very similar to 'Dorothy Perkins' but slightly larger in flower, deeper in colour, and not so subject to mildew.
Book (Apr 1993) Page(s) 298. Lady Gay Rambler, orange-pink, 1905, R. wichuraiana x 'Bardou Job'; Walsh. Description.
Book (Feb 1993) Page(s) 142. Lady Gay Wichuraiana rambler. Parentage: R. wichuraiana x 'Bardou Job'. USA 1905. Description and cultivation... Book (1966) Page(s) 186. Double pink small-flowered Wichurianas were very popular plants during the early part of this century and many are still to be found throughout the country - all flowering later than the large-flowered varieties. The cheerful 'Lady Gay' which produces a few of its bright rose flowers in the autumn; 'Minnehaha' with paler blooms.......
