Piscataqua Papers: Gardening from the Merrimack to the Kennebec (1965) p. 43 The Rose Program of the University of New Hampshire is slanted toward both disease resistance and hardiness. The Durham Pillar is a sensational success. It is a climber that is completely hardy and does not have either mildew or black spot, so does not have to be sprayed with fungicides. It also blooms all summer. The California rose breeders are using it, hoping to develop floribundas and hybrid teas that will have its hardiness and disease resistance.
