'Ming Toy' rose Reviews & Comments

For Ozoldroser and Bonita Cattell. A most interesting photo added today. Reading the patent might help. Apparently 'Ming Toy' produced no hips, sepals were smooth and stipules were almost non-existent. We'd love to see more photos.

It's a distinctive rose, would be great to know what the parentage is or for someone to have a stab at guessing.

I've posted another photo from Bonita, who wrote: "Bloom size is 2 inches, no prickles on stem but one hooked prickle behind a leaf. Bloom very regularly with little scent. It has been passed around in a family I know since the 1950's. Cuttings were taken from the family home in Cairns long, long ago." (Cairns is in the tropics.)

The patent website would be great if it worked for those of us overseas.

1948 Australian and New Zealand Rose Annual p23 Harry H. Hazlewood, The New Roses of 1947-48. Ming Toy . H. Poly. (Krebs). Small double blooms of deep rose pink, shaped like two inch rosettes, born in clusters of 6 or more on long almost thornless branches. The colour is rather hard in the day, but under artificial light it has a very telling effect. It flowers right into winter and will be valued greatly on this account. The growth is clean, with a reddish tinge on the young shoots, and on general appearance suggests Else Poulsen as one of the parents. p xi Hazlewood Bros Pty. Ltd. Advertisement. New Roses 1948.
