Thomas mentions a trip he took (in 1937) to Tom Smith's collection at Newry, where he saw this rose. p. 38: Vivid (Sometimes called Rosa gallica phoenicea, 'Rose de Normandie') Paul (UK) 1853. A hybrid rose of great vigour (to 6 feet). Probably related to the Centifolias. Blossoms: very double, vivid magenta-crimson. Thomas has never felt that this rose was a real Gallica, and was informed by Jean Muraour of Mougins that it was classed as a Hybrid Bourbon.
