Origin:

Bred by Joseph Pernet-Ducher (France, before 1910).
Introduced in France by Pernet-Ducher, Joseph in 1910 as 'Lieutenant Chauré'.
Introduced in Australia by Hazlewood Bros. Pty. Ltd. in 1911 as 'Lieutenant Chauré'.

Class:

Hybrid Tea.

Bloom:

Crimson, dark red shading. Moderate fragrance. Large, double (17-25 petals), borne mostly solitary, cupped bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Growing:

USDA zone 7b and warmer. Vigorous. Spring Pruning: Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood and cut back canes that cross. In warmer climates, cut back the remaining canes by about one-third. In colder areas, you'll probably find you'll have to prune a little more than that. Requires spring freeze protection (see glossary - Spring freeze protection) .

Notes:

Lieutenant Jean Chauré was the son of noted French horticulturalist and publisher, Lucien Chauré. He died in 1909 when the French Army's airship La République crashed, killing all four passengers. See References for the 1909 obituary in Journal des Roses.
