'Cherry Glow' rose Reviews & Comments

I am gardening in Central Texas, USA
My own-root Cherry Glow is a rather open tall-ish grandiflora reaching 5 to feet in height and 4-5 feet in width at maturity. It has been growing happily in a 10 gallon pot for 3 years. It tends to want to grow out and then up which makes placement a little difficult. It is also shy about throwing up canes from the bottom.
Young foliage is that mid-green suffused with lots of copper and is really lovely. The mature foliage is a nice looking dark green that ages well and is reasonably free of disease. While the plant has sufficient foliage, it still suffers from that "gaunt" look of many grandifloras.
The flowers are double with roughly 20 petals and decent form (in most cases) and a sweet fragrance of moderate intensity. Flushs slow and petal count comes way down in hot weather. Outside of mid-summer, however, the flushes can be impressive with a mix individual flowers and small clusters in a bright red suffused with pink that really does glow - especially in late afternoon and early evening.
The plant produced fertile pollen and will set seed. Seed count/hip is relatively low.
Update: plant removed Winter 2010 - Produces to few seeds. Use of the pollen has not contributed anything positive to the breeding program. While I cannot afford to allocate space to a non-breeding plant, this variety still has merrit and I recommend it as a garden plant.
