Candella/MACspeego/’Eternally Yours’ = Hybride de Thé… grande inflorescence aérée, chaque fleur au bout d’une longue tige… boutons pointus… corolles d’une vingtaine de pétales, parfois un peu inclinées sur leur tige, rouge cramoisi profond lavé de blanc argenté sur le revers des pétales… vigoureux quoique un peu grêle… Rustique et résistant malgré une légère sensibilité à l’oïdium… grandes feuilles vert sombre et vernissées. McGredy, Nouvelle-Zélande, 1990.

Candella (MACspeego) McGredy 1994; 'Howard Morrison' x 'Esmeralda'; Maroon crimson and silver bicolour; 42 reports on 69 bushes; 1. 5 metres; 7.0 rating. A variety of reporting with most liking the colour. A healthy bush but with a slow repeat and some growers complain that it has weak necks. The flowers are large but can be a trifle loose and can open quickly. Probably at its best as a fully open bloom with its striking deep maroon colour and silver reverse. The cooler weather also seems to intensify the colours. If the colour attracts you, you should find 'Candella' a good garden rose and good for picking with its long stems.

Eternally Yours (MACspeego) Hybrid Tea. McGredy 1996. flowers: red, creamy white hand painted edges, the reverse is a lovely silvery shade which during the heat of the summer takes on a cardinal red hue... connected with the Rotherham Hospice Trust which will benefit from the sale of the rose...

Candella (MACspeego); McGredy 1994; 'Howard Morrison' x 'Esmeralda'; maroon crimson and silver bicolour; 7 reports on 16 bushes; 1-4 years; l.4 metres; 7.1 rating. Variable reports some good and some not so good. Most reports indicate stems have weak necks and the repeat of blooms is poor. In general it is healthy, although Southland reports black spot and downy mildew and the growth is unbalanced. Bushes are robust and the blooms are large in a striking deep maroon colour with a silver reverse to the petals, in cooler weather they show a hand painted effect. The blooms can be a trifle loose and they could do with more petals. Most reports say they like it in spite of all its shortcomings.

Candella (MACspeego); McGredy 1994; 'Howard Morrison' x' Esmeralda'; maroon crimson and silver bicolour; 12 reports on 15 bushes; 1-3 years; 1.4 metres; 7:0 rating. Variable reports some good and some not so good. Bay of Plenty likes the eye-catching colour and the large robust bush. Rotorua finds it hangs its head frequently and is not growing well. North Harbour finds the repeat is slow and there is not enough flowers. A report from Otago says it has grown well, some problems with downy mildew, few flowers which tend to flop, stems rather weak, but likes the hand-painted colouring. Wairarapa, Marlborough and Northland like the bicolour blooms, but wish they were a bit more prolific and not so loose. Few complaints on the health.

Best Hybrid Tea. Candella (MACspeego). Raised by McGredy, New Zealand. Parentage: 'Howard Morrison' x 'Esmeralda'. The colour combination of this new release from Sam McGredy is absolutely stunning. The flowers are scarlet with a lighter red rim on each petal, but what really sets them off is the silver reverse on the petals. I had a vase of blooms at home recently, and in the evening light the silver looked almost luminous. In true hybrid tea style the flowers are all carried on long single stems, ideal for picking. The bushes grow fairly vigorously to about 1.8 metres, with glossy disease-resistant foliage. With all this going for it, there has to be a weakness somewhere, and there is. Unfortunately, the huge flowers have a rather weak neck and tend to droop in too much heat or after a little rain.

Candella (MACspeego). McGredy 1994. 'Howard Morrison' x 'Esmeralda'; maroon crimson and silver bicolour; 13 reports on 19 bushes; 1-2 years; 1.4 metres; 7.4 rating. From the reports received on this newish HT it is a strong growing rose which is mainly healthy except for some powdery mildew and downy mildew reported from Nelson and Sanson. The blooms are large in a striking colour of crimson maroon with a silver reverse, an Otago grower likens it to a larger 'Old Master'. A reporter from Manawatu thinks it is one of McGredy's best with splendid foliage, vigour, health and repeat. Hamilton, Southland and Sanson report weak necks and the outer petals droop quickly. North Harbour is troubled by spider mites in the hot weather. It sounds a promising rose; we will await further news next year.
