'Jan Spek' Cluster-flowered. Jan Spek is known to every rose-lover through 'Spek's Yellow', the leading yellow rose of the 1950s and '60s; and though it was not of his own raising - he only made it popular - it is fitting that the rose that bears his own name should be golden yellow too. the buds are often brushed with red, but this vanishes from the open flowers, which are 8 centimetres (3 inches) across and carried in large clusters on a dark-leafed plant of fashionably low growth. 'Jan Spek' was a tribute by Sam McGredy to an old friend and colleague. It was introduced in 1966.

Miss M. D. Braund. Roses - With or Without Thorns.
'Jan Spek' about three feet high needs those thorns - lovely yellow fading to creamy-white - she would be the first to be attacked by marauding creatures.
Book  (1972)  Page(s) 62.

The Final Analysis. 1971-72. 'Jan Spek'. 7.3 rating. 3 & 1/2 ft. This looks best as a border where the fading of the older blooms adds variety, on the individual bush this looks messy. It is continuous flowering and healthy but for some blackspot.

p38 Sam McGredy: Another rose similarly berefit of decent progeny is 'Jan Spek'. I have never had a seedling from this rose that was worth anything - all its seedlings were scrawny with blooms of a pale colour and with confused centres. I believe I could make a million crosses with 'Jan Spek' and get nothing.

p84 Black and white illustration 'Jan Spek'.

p91 Other complimentary or sentimental names selected by rose-breeders are those of their friends or of persons admired, as for instance 'Jan Spek', which I chose for a very successful rose named for one of my best friends.

p99 There is discussion at present concerning a name for the new type of rose represented by 'Marlena', 'Jan Spek' and 'Picasso'. These are dwarf, bushy roses and there are proposals that they should be called 'compacta'. I would prefer the English 'cushion roses' as more immediately comprehensible and saleable....

p121 Stripping the poll - that is, winning all the major awards in any competition - is very difficult and is superlative publicity. I have done it three times. At The Hague, in 1970.... for the best rose in the whole garden during the last five years to 'Jan Spek'. That triumph brought a lump to my throat that day because all the trade was there, all my competitors, and they all submitted new roses for trial. But best of all, my old friend Jan Spek - the first friend I made on the Continent, after whom I had named the rose - he was there to see his namesake acclaimed as the very best rose among so many. Curiously, the rose had not done very well in Britain - in fact it had been adversely criticised by many people, but it had won the Belfast trials. It is a beautiful rose that seems to like the Irish climate. And it had won in Holland for Jan Spek, and that was marvellous. I have a picture of Jan going forward with me to receive the medal, both of us very proud.

p143 In 1966 my rose 'Jan Spek' with a medium-yellow bloom that goes creamy yellow before petal-fall, was the rose of the year and two years later it was awarded the Golden Thorn at Belfast.

p145....and it is only since the advent of .... and 'Jan Spek'.... that we have had plants that are absolutely winter-hardy so that frost will not kill them.

p157 'Jan Spek'. 'Clare Grammerstorf' x 'Faust'. Very winter-hardy light-yellow floribunda.
