I think the zone in the original description is a little conservative, as is the description of its scent. I'd seen/smelled it at several rose gardens in France and when I walked by it at the Royal Botanical Garden in Hamilton, ON, the scent grabbed me like an old friend.

I have grown it successfully for a couple of years and I estimate I'm zone 5b. I still love the scent.

This rose is VERY vigorous, and insanely thorny! The flowers are big, semi-double and beautiful.

I was the one who posted this comment.

In my experience with it, as with Graham Thomas's experience, it does not rebloom. I live in a fairly cool summer climate (Boston area), which could have something to do with my experience, but while my summer is fairly cool and short, Graham Stuart Thomas (in The Graham Stuart Thomas Rose Book) also states that as of his writing at the time it had never rebloomed for him.

However, as some of the photos here indicate when it is in bloom it can fill a very large area with white flowers. In eastern Massachusetts this is the sort of climbing rose that could fill a 30' long picket fence with flowers all by itself. (I have seen it do more or less exactly that on a picket fence in Rockport, MA.)

The flowers do have a nice scent, but to my nose it is of below-medium strength. I detect no fragrance from the flowers unless I deliberately sniff them and when I do I detect a relatively mild, pleasant scent.

It is disease-free where I grow it, in an area where Tausendschoen and Dr. W. Van Fleet can suffer from powdery mildew from late summer through autumn, and two hybrid teas (Fragrant Cloud & Paul Shirville), an unknown Austin rose (one of the peach/apricot multitude, but not Abraham Darby), and Salet have all suffered from black spot. It also never suffers any winterkill here. Even during a freak winter we had perhaps five years ago where the weather was extraordinarily mild through January (with temps. even into the 50's & 60's during Dec. & Jan.), followed by a severe cold snap in the 2nd week of Feb. (where the temps. suddenly plummeted to near zero), a cold snap that killed my White Rose of York (a rose normally hardy into zone 3), City of York emerged completely undamaged.

Rainshine,

If you go to the main page of the listing for City of York, you will see a tab which says, "Available From".  Click on that. There are a number of fine nurseries listed as offering it.

Best of luck
