[From The Makers of Heavenly Roses, 1985, pp. 161 ff:] R. Harkness & Co ...was owned by William Ernest Harkness, first cousin of my father. ...After the army finally brought itself to dispensing with his services, he became landlord of the Raven, a village pub at Hexton, near Hitchin. His purpose was to grow roses by day and earn some money from beer by night, until such time as he could start his own nursery....Bill bought the name and the list of customers [of his father's nursery]....He died in December 1959.
