Side by side with the craving for double flowers seems to exist the desire for single varieties, of which this is one. The flowers are of large size, with obovate petals arranged in a double series, somewhat undulated or plaited, and rose-coloured, suffused with carmine. The broad open centres exhibit the yellow stamens, and the flower on the whole is bright and attractive. Exhibited by Mr. W. Gordon, Twickenham, Middlesex.

Tree Pæonies.
As to Von Siebold's introductions, they were partly sold to Prince Frederic of the Netherlands, and never passed into commercial hands; the rest, as far as I remember, were bought by Messrs. E. H. Krelage & Son, of Haarlem. Those given over to commerce were—

Les pivoines en arbre, importées du Japon par Mr. von Siebold en 1844 dans son établissement à Leyden, sont depuis 1850 cultivées et multipliées par ses soins de Mr. Baumann, à Gand.

It is said the Chinese reckon their varieties of Moutans by hundreds, as we do with Roses and other flowers in this country. Dr. Siebold obtained from the Imperial Gardens of Jeddo and Mijako all the finest sorts known in Japan, and cultivates them in his nursery at Leyden. The following are in his enumerated list:
Prince Albert. Petals dark brown red, the outer ones variegated with white and green. Disk (centre) purple.
