Two rows of very broad, rounded, smooth guard petals of pure white; center a rounded mass of thin staminodes of rich buff-yellow; carpels green, tipped pale yellow; fragrance not good. Moderately tall; vigorous; floriferous, with slightly bending stems and crinkled foliage. Considered the most beautiful white Japanese peony. The flowers are extremely large and almost perfectly shaped. According to information received from Japan by Mr. Franklin B. Mead, of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, the correct name of this peony is Isami Jishi, which means Smiling Lion. The present name is so well established, unfortunately, that it seems undesirable to attempt to correct it. "A careful study of this variety and Toro-no-maki revealed no difference whatever."—Fewkes. "Two rows of guard petals (?)."—Little.
Website/Catalog (1926) Page(s) 73. Rare Single Japanese Peonies The so-called Japanese Peonies are those which have one or two rows of petals and centers of stamens much thickened. These are almost devoid of pollen and oftentimes make a thick cushion of golden yellow. The effect is very beautiful and distinct and they continue to bloom throughout the Peony season. Although strong growers they propagate slowly and the stocks are usually limited. Isani Gidui 9.3, tall strong stems, rounded petals of pure white with a thick cushions of golden stamens. We consider this the best white which we have ever seen, but our stock is very limited and for this year it is not for sale.
Website/Catalog (1926) Page(s) [7]. The Japanese peonies are so called because the Japanese have given them more attention than any other people. They are the third stage of doubling. The yellow stamens have become thickened and are almost petals. They may be told from the singles by the fact that they never bear pollen, while the singles always do. They do make seed very freely. Isami-Jishi (generally known as Isani-Gidui), Toro-no-maki and Yeso are the best whites.
Website/Catalog (1898) Page(s) 12. Pæonia officinalis. (Herbaceous Peonies.) A rich Japanese flower, perennial, flowering in middle of summer. 24. Isamijishi. Pink, and yellow filamental petals in centre.
