Japanese Peonies (albiflora)

Large, bright aster purple, midseason. Staminodes purple-tinged on the upper surface, with yellow edges and yellow to orange-colored filaments. Carpels smooth, with cream-colored tips; disk distinct, white. Plant medium size; spreading; flowers very attractive and quite numerous. Two different dark pink forms with pink-tipped carpels were also received under this name.

Japanese Peonies
Some-ga-Noka (Japan) 9.0. You will note by the rating that Some-ga-Noka has the highest rating of any of the red Japs. The guard petals are a rich dark, velvety red. The center is a ball of golden yellow staminoids partially transformed and streaked red. A Brand Division $5.00.

Descriptive List of Chinese Peonies
Some Ganoko. (Origin unknown.) 9.0.
Japanese type; large; midseason. Broad, waved, and cupped guard petals of clear dark crimson; broad, flat center of much crinkled light buff staminodes, tinted with rose-red markings; carpels pale yellow, with a white line at the base; very fragrant. Height about 2 feet; fairly strong growth; slightly spreading; free-blooming. Foliage dark green, broad, and ruffled.

The Japanese peonies are so called because the Japanese have given them more attention than any other people. They are the third stage of doubling. The yellow stamens have become thickened and are almost petals. They may be told from the singles by the fact that they never bear pollen, while the singles always do. They do make seed very freely.
Mikado, Fuyajo, and Some-ganoko are fine reds of different shades.

At the present time, there are several nurseries in Japan which grow both herbaceous and tree peonies. One of these, which does a large export business to England and America, maintains an office in each country. Twenty-nine varieties of the herbaceous peony are listed in the catalogue of this nursery, the names of some of which are delightfully quaint. Someganoko—painted fawn, Shishi-Odori—dancing lions, Kame-no-Kegoromo—turtle's holiday attire, are among the most diverting.
