I wanted to add that Happy Chappy grows in the Rose Hills garden in Whittier, CA. Could not find a button to add that garden.

Jolene,

We don't seem to have this garden listed on HMF, can you provide more information or the full name ? Thanks.

Hi,

This is the "Pageant of Roses Garden" at the entrance of Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, CA. It is an International Rose Trials garden, judged quarterly by a permanent judging panel of "expert" rosarians, and once each year by an international panel of invited judges.

It is a public garden - 3888 South Workman Mill Rd, Whittier.

The curator is Dr. Tommy Cairns.

As you are familiar with this garden, could you approach them about providing a list roses growing in there. HMF has the ability to read a list of plant names and use it to update a listing very quickly. Even more helpful is if the list includes additional information like breeder and year bred. This is very useful when a name is shared by multiple plants.

Thanks.

I will do my best. What format should the list be in?

Excel? Word? Text? Access?

That would be great. The answer to your question depends on the information they provide. If they provide only a plant name then a text file with a single name per line is fine. The problem with just providing a plant name is the issue of matching to the proper HMF plant listing when that name is shared by more then one plant. A surprisingly common scenario.

When they provide additional information like class, breeder or year bred, we need a format which allows us to readily distinguish between information supplied (name, class, breeder,etc.). This is best done with a "formatted" file of some sort.

An Excel file with the information in columns works very well. An Access database file would be fine too.

Best of all, both Excel and Access provide for "exporting" data to industry standard format called "CSV" (comma separated values) which can be directly uploaded to an HMF listing using their plant name list upload feature. HMF's very sophisticated processing reads a CSV file and presents a form with all the plant matches found as well as those matching multiple HMF entries allowing one to select the proper match. The whole process is so fast and efficient it allows one to update a listing with thousands of names in just a few minutes.

WRT a garden list I will add one day: we tack ROR (renamed old rose) onto our study names. Would it be easier for you if this were removed? For roses sold under wrong names, we use "Rose Sold As XY" or "Not XY" (+/- ROR). Would you prefer "XY - Not", in the way that some foundlings are already listed on HMF?

Margaret,

Any additional information in the name, especially prefixed, makes it more difficult for HMF to match it to one of its plant listing so excluding 'ROR' would likely help. And yes, suffixing the additional information will greatly improve the matching process.

If you like, write me with some specific examples and I can tell you if they would be problematic. Worse case scenario is the plants are listed without any automatic matches but we provide a very convenient alternate manual lookup facility.
