Thank you for your update on that rose with heavy rain (blackspot problem). Roses with dark-green foliage do well in alkaline clay, ONLY IF there's excellent drainage. I have heavy clay, and the bottom is quite dense with limestone rocks. To handle week-long rain, I have to dig 2.5 feet deep, and at least 2 feet wide, to handle the tremendous volume of rain. My most healthy roses are the ones which I spent at least 1 hour digging per hole, throwing away rocks & dense clay at bottom.
My Firefighter rose was healthy until we got into late fall .. with week-long constant-rain. It died through my zone 5a winter. When I dug that up, deep down to 2.5 feet, I found a big rock (the size of a long watermelon), that was the cause of poor drainage, thus blackspots in prolonged rain.

Ah, what I saw was not sunburn, but general wilt from heat intolerance. Or maybe needing excess water.
