A more fully authenticated encounter took place in 1912 when a Pernet-Ducher rose with flame-coloured blooms won the prize of 1,000 pounds offered by the London Daily Mail for the best new rose of the year. It was planned to call it the ‘Daily Mail Rose’, but unfortunately, Pernet-Ducher had already promised to name the rose after the wife of a friend, Edouard Herriot, who was to become prime minister of France in 1924, but who was then an almost unknown local politician. Pernet refused to break his promise to his friend, so the rose was called the ‘Daily Mail Rose’ in Britain but remained ‘Madame Edouard Herriot’to the world at large.

p45. Dr. A. S. Thomas. Pernet-Ducher had introduced his Pernetiana breeding in 1900 with the vivid colourings of the new hybrids but also the soft almost spongy wood and constitutional die back and black spot. However, roses of this type did not reach the Australian market until about 1912 or 1914. The earliest of these which I can recall that we grew were ‘Lyon Rose’ and ‘Mme. Edouard Herriot’ (Pernet-Ducher, 1913). We had two plants of each in our garden of 150 plants.

p47. 'Mme. Edouard Herriot' Pernetiana-HT (Pernet-Ducher, 1913), had shapely coral-red blooms with good form but only about 25 petals and weak necks. The colour was sensational at that time.

Madame Edouard Herriot (H.T., Pernet-Ducher 1912) - Despite her age, this variety is rightfully still very much esteemed, especially in the climber form. we look forward to her early bloom, her lasting blooming, her wealth of blooms and the wonderful colouring of the rose.
