Happiness Hybrid Tea, Meilland, 1949. Parentage: ('Rome Glory' x 'Tassin') x ['Charles P. Kilham' x ('Charles P. Kilham' x 'Capucine Chambard')] Description... As a greenhouse variety it was highly successful and gave perfectly formed, hard-petalled, long-lasting blooms for florists the world over... The blooms are large, brilliant crimson at first, then pale to medium red with a little "blueing" in the color tone... the plant is not hardy...

Bud long, pointed; flowers medium red, double (38 petals_ high-centered, large (5-6 in.); slightly fragrant; upright, vigorous growth.

Dr. A. S. Thomas, Roses In The Cut-Flower Trade.
At that time [1953] more cut flowers were grown in Holland than elsewhere in Europe. Roses predominated and blooms of 'Rouge Meilland' outnumbered all others - today one would have difficulty in finding a plant of it.  In 1953 I saw a very big van load of this cultivar unloaded at a florists shop in Marseilles.  It was by far, Europe's best seedling cut flower of any type, at that time.

in 1951 [Francis Meilland] obtained from the Ministry of Industry and Energy a Brevet d'Invention for his new rose 'Rouge Meilland'. This was a red variety for cutting, introduced in America as Happiness.

Happiness came into being in 1937 in Tassin from a crossing of Marrakech and Leonce Colombier.

L'étude du parfum des roses par Neville F. Miller, spécialiste dans ce domaine, est fort intéressante mais très compliquée pour celui dont le vocabulaire chimique est assez pauvre même dans sa langue maternelle, je vais donc faire mon mieux pour me tirer de cette tâche avec le minimum d'erreurs. (American Rose Annual 1963) ...L'auteur a étudié 170 variétés sous différentes conditions atmosphériques et constaté l'existence de plus de 25 parfums élémentaires et de beaucoup de combinaisons de ceux-ci. Les plus fréquents sont : capucine, iris, violette, pomme, orange, citron, girofle, géranium. Un tableau groupe les 34 parfums principaux et composés, les variétés correspondantes étant rangées en conséquence...
