I would love to hear comments of people's experiences with this rose. I have read that it is extremely fragrant, hardy, disease resistant, and tolerant of some shade, but also that the flowers open very quickly and that it is not all that different from "Mr. Lincoln".

I would say that Firefighter is a better rosebush than Mister Lincoln. I have both, and the Mister Lincoln definitely gets more powdery mildew. The flowers do not open more quickly than ML. The scent is just as intense as well.

I believe that Firefighter is better than Mr. Lincoln. Both are richly fragrant and dark red velvety in petal texture with loads of substance. Mr. Lincoln is more prone to BS and FF more prone to PM it seems but both will get both diseases to some extent. Mr. Lincoln really loses out on stinginess of bloom and slow repeat though, so I give the edge to Firefighter. Mr. Lincoln just finally bored me to tears after five years in my garden, but FF remains one I really like. I shovel pruned ML this past Spring 2009. John

In the Edmund's rose catalog this is listed as "strong" fragrance, but on this website it says "mild". Can anyone tell me how they would classify it's fragrance?

I don't grow this rose, so have no personal experience with it. I have purchased a good number of roses from Edmond's and have found their descriptions to be spot on.
Good luck

You will find reference often offer slightly different descriptions. As any breeder will confirm, soil and climate can yield some significant variation in a plant's characteristics.
That's were a site like HelpMeFind can really be useful. If site guests with experience with a given plant would use the Q&C (questions and comments) tab found on each plant display to share their experience we would have a fantastic collection of real world results instead of just those from the more controlled environment of the breeder and nursery.
PLEASE consider sharing your experience with your roses with the HMF community. That's a big part of what this site is about.

I live in zone 7B and my Josephs coat suffers with quite a bit of black spots and the plant is quite thorny.

Thank you for providing this information. I have updated the rose page to show that the rose can get blackspot and is well armed with thorns.
Smiles,

I don't get blackspot but you're right about the thorns. The rose has hundreds of tiny thorns so don't forget your gloves!

I don't know if this will help you or not on the blackspot but it works for me..... I use only organic methods with my roses, mulch well, feed with rose-glo and I put whole ground cornmeal which you can purchase at your local feed store inexpensively around the rose bushes if they show any blackspot problems. I live in hot humid South Texas, and this works well for me. I never spray my roses.
