Lavender is my favorite plant in the garden - but it likes dry soil like daylillies. The peach tree next to it also likes my alkaline soil high in limestone, it makes the fruit really sweet.

Crown Princess Magareta, Firefighter, Mary Magdalene, W.S. 2000, Evelyn, Frederic Mistral, and Stephen's Big purple are those that give me the most cut flowers.

Picture of my garden taken in May, 85+ degrees. Radio Times is pink, Pat Austin is orange, and Mary Magdalene is white. Mary M. became mildewed when I gave it too much Acid-fertilizer early spring. Once I scraped off the fertilizer, and water her with my alkaline tap water - she's clean for the rest of the year.

When I bought own-root roses, I grow them in pots first until their roots are big enough to plant deep for winter survival. This is Poisedon, after 2 months of purchase as gallon-own-root.

Austin roses does well in partial shade, esp. Christopher Marlowe, Wise Portia, and Pat Austin (this bloom gets scorched if the temp. is above 80's). This pic. is taken early spring, and the bushes are still small.

Some rose are band-sizes so I grow their roots in pots, before transferring to the ground. The plastic pots with better drainage do better than the styrofoam pots. Plastic also absorb heat better, which gave roses a head-start duing cold spring.

Since the drought of 2004, I put black plastic edging, newspaper, then brick along side to retain water. The beds hold water well that way, so I don't need to water, except for newly planted roses.
