Very vigorous upright rose, almost reached 6.5ft tall in 2nd year with only PM sun. Thorny.

100% agree, very upright. I kept pruning it down to around 2-3’ because it wanted to reach for the sky each time it bloomed- even in San Francisco.

I have many other petal packed roses without issues, but this one seems to be prone to balling, only a handful of blooms opened for me off two plants. The blooms that did open are beautiful with a strong fruity fragrance. Both are in full sun with no overhead rain or watering, but a coastal fog influence. I haven't seen any signs of disease common in my area- rust or PM.

I have the exact same experience, except coastal influence rather than a more serious coastal fog. I had no flowers open until the fall flush. Extremely prone to balling in my climate! However, beautiful rust free and powdery mildew free foliage. I can’t speak for black spot since that isn’t something we have in the Los Angeles Basin. The flowers are beautiful, reminds me of Evelyn, and very fragrant.

Per an email conversation I had with Jackson & Perkins Jan 2020 about their "sneak peek" AA186-7 rose that became Larger than Life, the parentage is Memorial Day x Mellow Yellow (JACmedameye).

Somethng is slightly amiss there gavinj. I am reading your comment as Mellow Yellow (JACmedameye) is the pollen parent. And yet ‘Larger than Life’s code is JACmedameye.

I think Gavinj has it right. JAC is Jackson Perkins shorthand, meda is apparently J&P's code for memorial day (first two letters of each part of name), and meye is apparently J&P's code for mellow yellow (first two letter of each part of that name). Mellow Yellow is out of Weeks's shop and has a WEK prefix. Looks like J&P is getting a little more transparent about their codes (YAY!)

Oh, now I understand. ‘Larger than Life’ (JACmedameye) parentage is Memorial Day x Mellow Yellow. Thank you Gavinj and Kathy.

Blooms fade/bleach within a couple of days after beginning to open in mid-60s to low 70s with little to no fragrance for me. Dark glossy foliage seems extremely susceptible to rust in my coastal garden, but no PM issues. The growth habit in its first year has been narrow and upright about 1.5' x 4'. I personally don't find this rose to be anything special and plan to replace it next season.
