Raised in 1965 by the Reykjavík Botanic Garden in Iceland by seed of an open pollinated 'Betty Bland' (very likely with a Rugosa cultivar as a pollinator). The cultivar has been propagated and sold by Icelandic plant nurseries since the eighies. First by the name 'Betty Bland', then by 'George Will' and then by 'Wasagaming'. None of these names were right and the cultivar was described and given a name by the curator (Hjörtur Thorbjörnsson) of the Reykjavík Botanic Garden in the 2010 annual proceedings of the Horticultural Society of Iceland. In Iceland 'Skotta' is very floriferous and continues to bloom until late autumn. The plants are sterile and hips are very rarely seen.
