Received 2 bareroots of HH from Walmart (National Plant Network). They were really dry looking, so I soaked them for two days before potting. Placed in shade.

6/17- they are both sprouting, but one more so
4/6/2024- Both small plants opened their first bloom on the same day.

Damage from Houston's December 2022 Arctic blast. Highs near 80 degrees the day before the acrctic front arrived. 40 mph winds, lows down to 16 degrees, stayed below freezing for two days. No ice, no snow. It has been warm (60s and 70s) ever since, so everything is starting to grow back and it's easier to see where the damage is and who is not growing back at all. I REALLY hope we don't have another major freeze this year or it may finish some of these off.

I'm still in complete shock that I've lot so many roses to winter cold in the past two years. Nobody protects roses here in Houston, because it's not "supposed" to be needed. I have a big, open yard (with only 1 close neighbor) and those winds sweep right through. So now I'm cutting down whole 10 foot wide rose bushes and hoping they they 1. can grow back and then 2. survive our brutal summer in a weakened state.

After the freak winter storm in 2021 I had a few teas (Rainbow being a notable example) that died back to the ground and tried to grow back a little and even bloomed, only to be finished off by July. I'm hopeful that won't happen here. I didn't dig out any stumps and continue to give water and food, but the roses that I thought were dead, have not made a move at all to challenge that assertion.

Final note 12/29/2023- The following spring/summer were record breaking hot and drought stricken and several of my most injured roses died by September. Comtesse du Cayla, Etoile de Lyon both died despite having regrown a bit in spring.
