One of the thorny canes on my Cornelia. September 2009, North Carolina. [Edit: At that time, I was wondering whether the rose wasn't coming down with the first symptoms of Rose Rosette Disease. The disease was confirmed by early April of 2010.]

Showing some of the black thorns and a few leaflets with a yellowing along the edges. North Carolina, September 2009. [Edit: At that time, I was wondering whether the rose wasn't coming down with the first symptoms of Rose Rosette Disease; the fact that some canes had black thorns for the first time ever, and other canes had no black thorns seemed strange to me, as well as a sudden increase in the numbers of thorns on many stems. Rose Rosette Disease was confirmed by early April of 2010 with classic red ultra-leafy rosettes and reddening canes, but oddly enough, none of the thorns were black by the spring.]

This was planted as a bareroot rose three months ago, in late April 2009. Location: close to full sun in North Carolina, with other plants very closeby. I have another Fragrant Wave in a pot in maybe 4 or 5 hours of sun and it's blooming well and is healthy too, but it's not spreading with the extra more widespread canes like those to the right that you see here. Both have bloomed in frequent flushes for two months now.
