I inherited with the house we bought a clematis that I cut back to 12" in the spring and it is growing like crazy -- well over 6' tall and thick! However, there are no blooms. It flowered last year. What could be the problem?

maybe it,s one of the spring flowering clematis.i;e; the montana group. if so,it will not flower until next spring, but don,t trim it any more ,if you can help it ,as the flowers form on this years growth.if it is getting out of hand, you can trim it ,to keep it in check.

Thanks, Maggie. I called my local nursery and he told me I had probably cut off all the buds when I cut it back. He too advised not to cut it back again in the spring but to just trim it to the height I want it in the fall and leave it alone.

hi susan,
glad i could help.you can take cuttings of your clematis at this time of year,as then by next spring,it will flower,as you know ,this montana type clematis ,grows very rapidly.
cut this clematis to keep it under control, after it has finished flowering in the spring.
