A very tough garden plant, no weaknesses at all. It grows quite big and needs careful pruning. Does not sucker in my garden. Unfortunately no scent. The flowers are quite small. The colour in my photo is a bit too red. Actually the flower is cool purple.

For me this is the most beautiful gallica rose, because of the sheer beauty of the flower. I never want to miss the few weeks that is is in bloom. |
Nice filled flowers on a low bush. Very little scent. If you want scent and this colour, choose Jayne Austin. If you need real yellow, choose The Pilgrim or Graham Thomas. This one is apricot fading to cream. |

St. Cecilia is a very delicate rose in appearance and colour. The scent is a variety of the myrrh fragrance. They are really all different. The plant is rather open en thin, but the beautifull cup shaped flowers make up for that.

English Garden is supposed to be a tough garden plant. For me it's rather weak and much less desirable than Jayne Austin, which is about twice its hight. The colour is not yellow (which Jayne is not either), but apricot fading to cream. Hardly any scent. |
A famous gallica rose, but in spite of the occasional nice picture I took of it, I must say that it is a bit disappointing to me. The plant is very unmannered, in bad weather it hangs across everything within reach and on top of that it suckers a lot. For me it doesn't give much flowers either and there's no scent. For me there are better old garden roses. Maybe it's better in a hot dry climate. Most of my gallica roses go floppy in my garden, which has very rich and moist clay. I hope my experience is not common. |
No other rose matches the velvety red colour and the richness and openess of this rose. The plant suckers, but not as badly as other gallica's. Not much scent. I find it impossible to tell this rose from Tuscany. I think they're both superb! |

This famous Bourbon never gets tired. It's strong, vigorous and quite healthy for an old repeat bloomer. The flowers are huge and strikingly bold in colour, yet they are always charming. This is as rosy as a rose can get. Did I mention the scent? It is really all you will ever want from a rose. This rose is an ideal climber, that will give you numerous flowers if you train the canes horizontally. Absolutely one of the best old garden roses.
