I grow this rose because I do love the flowers but I have to admit that it's quite blackspotty in my climate which is cool temperate. Nonetheless, it's a strong grower which I'm prepared to spray occasionally because of the beauty & fragrance of its flowers.

William Shakespeare is a beautiful rose but he does benefit from being sprayed with a dormant oil and sulphur before he buds out. Just follow the directions on the package for roses instead of fruit trees. Gardeners say that William Shakespeare 2000 is a better rose as it is not as prone to black spot.

I have to say that, in my garden, the original 'William Shakespeare' was way better than WS2000. Healthy, vigorous, and everblooming, maybe the best crimson-purple Austin Rose I've grown.

Tess of the D'Urbervilles behaves very good too in our garden! It grew up to 1.50 m. in just one season after planting and no diseases!

I went ahead and bought this rose and I find it spectacular. It produced non-stop deep crimson flowers all summer long its first year. I can't wait to see what it does the second. Strongly recommend this rose.

Hi, I've just started growing this rose in Australia, up until now (start of autumn/fall) the rose has not stopped blooming! An absolute winner! I even moved in the middle of summer as our pets had taked a liking to the roses - I moved it in 45 degree celsius heat with a drama.

I planted this rose last year and it grew very tall but did not flower at all. I do have it where it would get some shade. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have also heard that Evelyn is not very vigorous and that the stems are not very strong to support the flowers, but mine is very strong.  I have noticed that Evelyn doesn't do very well in extremely hot conditions or full, unrelenting sun.  I moved the rose to a spot which was a little cooler and had a bit of shade and the rose thrived.
