There was a Just Joey tree rose which came with my father's house, unknown age but looks to be old (8+ years??). It has almost NO scent despite 2 years of pampering and ample sun. Is it my location (CA, near SF), lacking something or what? If this isn't fixable, I will be shovel pruning it this spring. I also planted new roses, Mr. Lincoln, Yves Piaget, and Perfume Delight, which are doing great (except for mild mildew which is a bear here) and have loads of scent.

Just Joey should be doing much better for you. Many times when a rose does not perform well, it can be caused by the budding. If a bud is not ideal, then the rose will not be an ideal plant. Because Just Joey is such a beautiful and scented rose, it may be a wisdom to replace it with another Just Joey.

I also have a Just Joey tree rose. The head is very large because i prune slightly. Just Joey reminds me of a tea rose. Its a wonderful rose and the sent is pleasing but not overpowering like a Jude the Obscure.

I have JUST JOEY in Mountain View, CA where is does well. The scent is heavenly and it is a large loose bloom; it resembles a peony. I do spray it with Miracle-Gro every three weeks, as I do with all my roses. The color is gorgeous. I noticed that this year it is has more blossoms. it is now 3 years old, as I am rather new to growing roses, having only begun in 2000. However, I was raised with them as my folks grew them. MR LINCOLN is a champ!! So  is SEXY REXY. Give 'JJ' a little more time, some roses improve with age, like a fine Calif. wine!

I have had a similar experience with JJ.  It has stayed low and is a magnet for blackspot.  Ditto for the one I have in a very big pot.  The blooms are fantastic, but not worth the space it takes up in my garden up here on the far north of the California coast.

I have been growing my Jude's for 2 years now and I am very pleased! They stand in large pots and are very healthy! One of them has become a climber and has reached 3 meters. The fragrance is overpowering and reminds of exotic fruits and Sauternes wine.
I think it's the best Austin rose to date!
