(1988) Page(s) 113-114. Two AARS Winners recorded as the sole production of Ollie Weeks in Modern Rose 8 are co-inventions of him and me as recorded by the Patent Office. These are PERFUME DELIGHT and ARIZONA – both Hybrid Teas. (By agreement I had no financial interest in either these two or GYPSY an AARS Winner for the Introduction Year 1973 ) The Patent Office has certain guidelines that qualify invention. These include (1) the making of a cross or the ordering or directing that the cross be made, and (2) the propagation of or the ordering or directing that a selection be propagated. As these two activities were a joint effort inevitably several generations of introductions require a statement of co-invention after the retirement of one of the co-inventors, (From five to ten years normally elapse after pollination to the actual marketing of a rose). This sort of circumstance arose in the carry-overs from Dr. Lammerts to me, from the carry-overs from me to Dr. David Armstrong, from me to Ollie Weeks, from Dr. Armstrong to me, and from me to Jack Christensen. All were registered with the American Rose Society with the same credits that applied to the invention except for PERFUME DELIGHT, ARIZONA and HONEY BUN where only one of the co-inventors were named in Modern Roses. I am not faulting the editors of Modern Roses.

(1988) Page(s) 33. A testimonial to the influence of WORLD’S FAIR on the color of BRAVO was a remark by Francis Meilland when he saw it growing in our field. We were walking slowly along the rows of new varieties in our nursery when he came to a stop looking at BRAVO. I remarked that we were going to introduce the variety but that we wished it were a stronger grower. Francis looked at me and said: (in his delightful French accent), “But Mr. Swim – the colour, the colour !” That was indeed the sterling quality of BRAVO.
(1988) Page(s) 40. CHIEF SEATTLE had many desirable qualities such as vigor, glossy foliage, fragrance and very fine flower form with 50 - 60 petals. The color was just not stable or novel enough to curry favor long with the customers for the plants.
(1988) Page(s) 150. EIFFEL TOWER = First Love X (Charlotte Armstrong X Signora)
(1988) Page(s) 50. I knew from my own records that FANDANGO had resulted from a cross of CHARLOTTE ARMSTRONG X (MRS. SAM MCGREDY X PRESIDENT HERBERT HOOVER). While FANDANGO itself was described as a "turkey red" and "orange-red" with "yellow base", one can discern from this seeming contradiction the variety was a very bright red.
