[This text was taken by Lindley as an early description of R. damascena. However, In Italy and Germany R. moschata was earlier actually called R. damascena as here reported. The description could be of the Single Musk, which was indeed used as a laxative].

...Rosa persica, as the Alexandrine commonly call it....Rose exists with us, but more shrub than tree size, green coloured. Armed with many sharp prickles. Ours have dense foliage. Numerous blooms with each 5 to 6 petals. Colour is between white and red [pink]....Called Persicae for a region in Persia where they first originated. ...
...blooms of this tree, dissolved in the stomach are a violent poison. This rose, by Italians, French, Germans, various persons often called Damascenas, as believed to have come from from Damascus, a noble Syrian city. In our proper place, it is almost thirty years, that they have come to attention. Firstly a valuable medicine among magnates & nobles, now is really to have everywhere.
